WE have a second hand heat pump bit are struggling to integrate it into the heating as the pipework is too small to achieve a fast enough flow rate.  WE really need a smaller unit that would need a lower flow and we could top up with electric heaters when it gets really cold.  Looking on ebay but not found anything suitable of late.

Financial logic would say replace the gas boiler and stay on gas for the next 15 years but I would prefer to be more environmental.  WE have issues like there is a max sound level permitted at the neighbours windows for heat pumps if they are at least 1m from the boundary of a neighbours property.  We would like to put our heat pump closer to the boundary than that so we would need planning permission and even though we would actually have a much quieter system than the rules permit, when you need planning they can then suddenly apply a much stricter rule.  Eg 1m from the boundary and it can make 40db of sound at the neighbours window with no comeback, 99cm from the boundary and you might be turned down if it makes 35db of sound at the neighbours window.

Have you seen the grants they are giving on air source heat pumps.... ds2 got a quote, it would cost less than 1k to put in his cottage.

Thanks, I got a quote for 4.5k with the grant but it would not have been a very good system, I then went to a company that could do what i wanted, their intial quote was 8k after the grant, but when they came and visited that increased to 19.5k....

They will still operate over the phone lines, just different equipment in the exchange.  Of course they could be putting in fibre?

"The last bit is still the same" is how the Openreach maintenance man explained it to me. The fibre "goes to the box on the corner, from there to your house is still copper wires".
