Where does the money go? If the past few days have done anything it's reinforced the need for an urgent review of the BBC licence fee.
I said that today. Ours is due this month £159...
I know this is not the thread for it, but when the licence fee was set up it was the BBC's only funding method. For many years now this has not been the case. They make a fortune from overseas sales, digital content, dvds and a whole host of other stuff. The fee is no longer justified, whichever way you look at it.
Back to Eurovision, I've got my fingers crossed for our boy.
Savvy will be wanting Iceland to win too, I think!
About four or five years (could be even longer that, years go by!) Eurovision went down a bit of a bad period for me. Perhaps they were mixing in genres. I didn't like half the songs. This year, the songs might sound the same to someone but all of them for me are good party songs. I liked them all and don't have any I can choose for. They're all good. Poor Iceland though as the performance lacked the sparkle of the rest for me as I could tell it wasn't live.
I don't know who I want to win - perhaps one particular so I can see if they have their winning snatched back from them later on. I was watching and - typical me I looked in the background and I thought that one of the performances broke the Contest rules about unacceptable language not being allowed. I spotted a word on the scenery listed as a "strong" word in the last broadcasting audience research. Perhaps it's like watching golf where a TV viewer spotted a breach of rules by Lexi Thompson some years back - golf.com/news/lexi-given-4-stroke-penalty-after-tv-viewer-spots-rules-violation-loses-in-playoff/ - I wonder what they'll do if that entry wins with me being the language police tonight. So, I want the one that potentially broke the rules to "win" (and then for it to be found that they did break the rules and they didn't win after all - wonder what will happen? Perhaps I'll be wrong and they will find it acceptable - it'll be fun to create some controversy afterwards though). Okay, less of rules, no-one wants that stuff tonight - I love being a killjoy to every best party!
I would mention which entry but that would be unfair whilst they've yet to decide if anything was broken or not. Probably the record word count for this thread being broken by myself. I suppose I just get fun if some sneaks a word into the Contest that they shouldn't. One little word. Query does this comply with the rules - funny!
I don't watch the performances. I must be a TV regulator - last time the ads being too loud the other day, now the Song Contest rules. I just watch to see if there are breaches of Contest rules, clearly. Joking about that: they were all good songs - I did enjoy them.
But, I mean, yeah - imagine if someone worked at Ofcom and how do they get home and watch TV and enjoy themselves? Perhaps they're watching and then suddenly there's a breach of the rules and they stop watching or they're watching just looking for breaches of the rules. I just seem to watch programmes fine, enjoying all the fun and notice something anyway.

I do want to read your comments on how a rule may possibly have been broken. I’d much sooner that than the fillers we have to watch whilst we wait for the votes to be counted.
On voting, I’m not sure why anybody would want to vote when you can’t vote for your own country. I suppose we could vote tactically if we cared enough for a country other than why-o-mewknee.

Your post is dead funny. (It's cracking me up anyway.) I hadn't even been aware of the fillers as I'd stopped to write all that but now you've drawn my attention to it, I can hear what you mean. It's not too bad to be fair. You really don't want me to go into details about how the meaning of the word has changed - one hurdle I have to get over (or maybe I create them myself - should have stayed quiet rather than raising an issue that helps the defence) is that the word also has, or had, a legitimate meaning (or maybe an illegitimate one, literally it's meaning of illegitimacy but more recent dictionaries have taken that out or listed it itself as offensive - in the context meant in the song, when words about dislike were on the screen, it's meaning is clearly the 'swear word' one). For you, that wishes to read this than hear the 'fillers', I don't see for the purposes of the Contest rules the TV watershed in the UK is relevant - if it's a swear word, it's unacceptable for the Contest (certainly one that people generally in the research have called "strong").
It's regarded in the broadcast research as generally acceptable post-watershed but unacceptable pre-watershed, so whether we have the EBU checking if it was after 9pm in the UK, which it was. However, where programmes begin before 9pm, in this case it began at 8pm, children may stay up (ah- think of the children!) particularly on a Friday or Saturday night to watch later, especially a special event. Therefore programme that began before 8pm ought to be pre-watershed compliant throughout perhaps, although a transition to more adult material acceptable later in the night. This may be regarded as an abrupt transition, coming relatively soon after the 9pm time even if not immediately. I didn't want to talk about TV regulatory rules though tonight!

Now you must tell us what word otherwise I'll have trouble sleeping.

It's probably not allowed on here. Rewind the Contest and have a look for it! I did that (you'll laugh) - I got I-Player out and rewound because the Italian (or Spanish) version appeared later on and I thought maybe that doesn't have the meaning there that it has here and that that would be acceptable, then made me doubt if I had seen the English swearword. But I rewound and, yes I had - right as the song immediately opened, in capital letters on the top left-hand side! I don't know whether organisers approved the scenery but it could be that they are from continental Europe so not necessarily aware of "unacceptable" meanings it has here - or its strength perceived in the research.

How far do we have to rewind?
Watch from 9pm and you won't have too far to watch (probably medium amount of time). They give you 2 hours on live rewind. Right at the start of the performance. Don't mention them on here though as, for all I know, they might not have broken the rules.

I would have missed it if I was listening only to the radio. I've always preferred the radio commentary on the Song Contest - and I did have it on online but it was running massively behind and not good having both the TV and radio running. I switched on the analogue radio set in front of me and muted the TV. With digital TV taking a few seconds to get through to us, the TV is about six seconds behind but it's watchable/hearable that way as not too bad. I've liked all the songs.

No politics please - other than the politics we get every year except last year on the Contest - wonder who Greece give 12 points to?
Just showing how to get round the swear filter. Perhaps you can try the same with the word you dont want us to know. e.g. Barsteward, sheet. Im sure you get the idea
I'm watching the results upstairs on an ordinary Freeview telly, Savvy. Please tell us the naughty word because the suspense is killing me.
[Scrapped the post - filter won't let me put the word even when referring to an Italian village with the word and the letter O added onto it. Changes it into a word that I found funny but which I think could cause even more upset to someone for another reason. Therefore decided best to quit the whole thing and not to use either the original or the filter's doubly inaccurate and singly offensive replacement.]
[Context: referring to new swearing, on the programme after 11pm, and not the word from 9.15pm the original topic of discussion anymore.]
What was the swearing now? Glad you asked me what to rewind the I-Player to as I went back to there and have the programme with the TV feed on as well, nearly live. I have noticed nothing - except when Graham just gave his apology so I now going to have to rewind before then by a few minutes aren't I? I couldn't see anything in the Moldova 12 points winner so it must have been some before that and perhaps a belated apology.
