A quick question that I'm sure some clever person will know the answer to.
If I pay my council tax with a credit card, does the council get charged more by the bank than if I use a debit card?
If our council tax is paid with a credit card then there is a surcharge for using this payment method. No surcharge for payments with debit card so the answer is probably yes.
Surcharges for paying by credit card were outlawed a few years ago...
The ban on credit and debit card surcharges is effective across the EU from Saturday 13th January 2018, and will apply to all purchases made where the banks of the consumer and retailer are within the EEA. In the vast majority of other circumstances surcharges are capped at the cost to the retailer for processing the payment. The UK Government took the decision to also include other payment methods such as PayPal in the ban to further protect consumers.

I thought adding a surcharge was not illegal? (edit: pipped to the post)
Sorry you are not happy with the way the deals are posted upstairs Locarr, would you prefer them all on this page cluttering it all up, or separate threads just downstairs?

I understood that too, but had a store try charging me £1.50 to use Am3x for ShopSm last summer, so some businesses either don't know or don't care and are still doing it 🙁. I left the store without buying.
Reminds me, I’ve bought myself a hand mixer, loaf tin and cake tin so that I can make those ‘free’ cakes off GJ and Shoppimum, oh and greaseproof paper and stork and bananas. I hope my cakes taste good!

Just asked family member who takes both.....Credit cards cost him more. I have always presumed this because many places used to make a charge when paying by this method. So he has confirmed that the charges are more. Good to know these things Sleazy perhaps it could be a good bargaining device. (Not for the Council though)

Anon
And the likes of Justeat ditched the credit card surcharge and introduced a ‘service charge’ on all transactions.

Just remembered something else. The business will NOT take American Express though. Apparently the paperwork for them is horrendous. He has to fill in reams of it . And(more important to the business) he has to wait months for the money. So all staff are told not to accept it.

I seem to recall that we discussed this when we were unceremoniously turfed off MSE and the post match analysis. Beyond the constant reporting which we were told made our thread too much work for the mods, and some arguments with some people blatantly trolling the Elite thread to get us closed, there was also a feeling that some of the deals/glitches we found and pursued were potentially attracting attention of the companies and discussing them in public was getting them closed down more quickly. The reason for putting some items upstairs here was to provide an additional level of protecting any glitches, deals, discount codes etc from potentially being discovered, or at least to give Elite a better chance of taking part. This wasn't possible at MSE but was identified as a clear benefit here.
I don't think it is too much effort for people to register for Elite (anonymously - with an anonymous username and an anonymous new free email for this purpose from Google, Hotmail or wherever to protect their RL identity) and they can then lurk or hopefully join in and post in safety.
The above said, we did not agree Elite would become a free for all, which is why some posts sometimes get removed and why we mods were asked to help keep the Elite on track 😇.

Surely it's not one persons choice? The boards are for everyone not one person
Just to add, I have seen scraper bots (think that is what they are called) from at least one world-wide company named after a rainforest visit the site.

You are very right, but always good to hear peoples views, and their thoughts behind them.
Too many variables. Depends on the different cards, might even depend on how the council have negotiated with the card providers.
Not certain of that info, just what I have learned talking to clients etc.
Just remembered one possibly salient fact, our travel agent will not take credit card payments, or prefers not to should I say, so either he has a bad deal or they are hideously expensive to accept.
Sad to only have done 5k miles since last year rather than our normal 10-11k, reflect a lot of things not done. This year will be better
Yes but look on the bright side. You haven't had to stand outside in the freezing cold watching football😳
11 days to go then we are back to matches every weekend Sat and Sun and some week nights probably until June... Still at least it shouldn't be as cold!

If we want everyone's opinion on this, I like the upstairs thread. Tonight I've been playing around on b@@ts and it was easy to go to the b@@ts thread to see if I'd missed anything. I would never have found those posts on the regular discussion thread. I do the same with Ts, Ms and Amazonian threads. Anon I agree if people want to read upstairs then let them register. Its no big deal after all. I also think that we should all just try and tolerate each other. Do we have a block button on here like MSE? I don't read everybody's posts as there's some that irritate me, as I'm sure I do them. I don't dislike them and would not wish to block them I just scroll past. As if this year hasn't been hard enough without more upset on here 🙃 And obviously this is just my opinion of which we are all entitled. The fact that we disagree doesn't make any of us right or wrong.... that's what an opinion is 😁

i think discussions on deals should be left here, I wouldn't describe them as clutter...the whole ethos of the elite is sharing finds...not hiding them.

I work in a similar way to di. Everything in it's place makes it easy to find things when I'm doing a shop and it's no hardship to register.
Do you miss things Locarr? If something is seriously big, like the John Lewis freebie it gets talked about on here as well so no-one should miss out.

Have you actually looked at all the threads upstairs? There are over 100 different threads. The amaz0n thread alone has over 2000 posts and that is a fairly recent thread. How exactly would people find the information they were looking for? It is like saying have a load of reference books on all the topics you are interest in, but tearing the contents page out of each book and throwing them all into the middle of the room. Also, and this is only my opinion, and I dont speak for anyone else here but myself, but if people cant be bothered to sign up, interact with the group, then sod em. I would go so far as to say people that dont contribute in some way (and I dont mean by posting deals, just a hello or a thanks is contributing in my eyes) should not have access. Life is full of people that just take. Also, people on here need to realise that they should not constantly have little digs at people. It does not go unnoticed, and will be stopped. This is not a place for that, and if anyone wants to do that, I will post a link for them below where it is/was tolerated. forums.moneysavingexpert.com/

I understand what you're saying but if we want to grow the group and attract new blood, hiding things won't help, if someone stumbled across the group they would be unlikely to stick around as it's doubtful if they would see any benefit on first glance.
I understand why discussions on pension and savings etc would be better upstairs and slimming stuff that not everyone is interested in but moving deals seems like we're hiding stuff and don't want to share.
yes there is a block function and Ive made good use of it

For anyone one else would like to utilise the block facility..... You have the ability to block interactions from other members, using something called your Block List. When you add a member to your block list, you can limit interactions with them in the following ways:
Hide this member's posts: When viewing a thread that this member has posted in, you will not see their posts. Instead, you will see a button labeled "Display Post". If you click this button you can see what the blocked member posted. Do not let this member start new conversations with me: The blocked member will not be able to start a new conversation with you. You cannot block conversations from staff members, however, and you'll still receive messages from any existing conversations with the blocked user until you leave the conversation via the Actions dropdown at the top of the conversation. Do not let this member follow me or my activities: The member will not be able to follow you, view your activity list, or see your email address. Block notifications from this member: You will not receive notifications related to actions that this member performs. For example, if the blocked member quotes you in a thread, you will not receive a notification about it, even if you have enabled notifications about quotes.
To get started, click the Profile button found in the top menu bar and then on your profile page click the Edit Profile button. You'll then be taken to the Edit Profile & Settings page; once here, click on the Privacy tab. On the privacy page, look for the Member Block List option found at the bottom of the page with a search field. In the search box, begin to type either the username or the display name of the member that you want to block and you'll see some search results appear as you type. Once you see the member you want to block appear, click on their micro-profile in the search results list. Once you have selected a member account to block, 4 check boxes will appear asking you which interactions you want to prevent with the member you chose. Check the boxes next to the interactions you want to prevent, and when you have made your selections click the Save Privacy Settings button found at the bottom of the page to complete the process.
Once you have a member blocked in your profile, you can return to the privacy page of your profile at any time to make changes. You can add or remove member from your Block List, or change the type of interactions you want to block for any member.
I think the way the forum is set up, it would be very unlikely for someone to stumble upon it. Most, if not all members are recommendations or from MSE.
Just to add, I have seen scraper bots (think that is what they are called) from at least one world-wide company named after a rainforest visit the site.

I must be honest when, I think it was TM, started talking about upstairs I did wonder what the heck she was on about. On the other hand if your a serious glitcher you'll soon work it out. I've tried to share glitching with my friends and family and do you know what.....they can't be bothered.... they're soon bothered when they see my persil collection or my toiletries cupboard or my naopolina tomato stash and go so far as to expect that I share them with them (which I do but I do it by choice and not because they expect me to) My point is that if people want to know, its not secret they just go upstairs and look. Again this is just my opinion and I know you're not alone disliking this set up, others have passed comment about it in the past. Hey and I'm impressed that I'm not on your blocked list..yet 🤣
